Honoring Youth, Sports, and Health

The Everest Football Tournament is a heartwarming annual event organized by our organization to commemorate the life of Kanchan Karki, a Nepali student tragically lost to a lightning strike in 2009. The tournament serves as a fitting tribute to Kanchan’s memory, emphasizing the values: youth, sports, and health. Each year, this event draws approximately 250 participants, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie, competition, and community spirit.

Project Goals:

  1. Honoring Kanchan’s Memory: The Everest Football Tournament stands as a living tribute to Kanchan, ensuring that his spirit and love for sports continue to inspire us. We remember him through the joy of the game and the bonds we build in his name.

  2. Promoting Youth Engagement: One of the central themes of this event is to actively engage and empower youth, especially immigrant youth. By participating in sports, they learn valuable life skills, build self-confidence, and form lasting connections within the community.

  3. Emphasizing Health and Well-being: Sports and physical activity are cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle. The tournament promotes the importance of regular exercise and the benefits of good health among participants, especially youth who may be new immigrants to Norway.

Key Highlights:

  • Inclusive Participation: The tournament is open to individuals of all ages and backgrounds, fostering inclusivity and diversity within our community. It’s an opportunity for individuals to come together, transcending cultural and language barriers.

  • Community Building: The event strengthens the bonds within the Nepali community in Norway and creates a welcoming space for newcomers. It’s an occasion for participants to forge friendships, share experiences, and support one another.

  • Youth-Centric Information: In addition to the football matches, the Everest Football Tournament incorporates informative sessions targeted at youth, particularly immigrants. These sessions offer insights into health, wellness, and resources available to them in their new environment.

  • Annual Tradition: The tournament has evolved into an eagerly awaited annual tradition, uniting us in our shared commitment to youth development, sportsmanship, and health awareness.

The Everest Football Tournament not only pays tribute to Kanchan’s memory but also actively promotes values: the vitality of youth, the joy of sports, and the importance of good health. It stands as a testament to our dedication to community-building, inclusivity, and the empowerment of our youth, forging stronger connections within the Nepali community and fostering a sense of belonging in Norway.
